IGCSE: Mathematics Command Words

As part of our exam preparation, students discussed and learnt about Command Words in IGCSE Mathematics.

Students often understand the concept but lose marks because they don't interpret the question correctly. Every command word gives a clue about what the examiner is looking for.

For example:

1. Calculate / Work out: You must show your calculation and working to get full method marks.

2. State / Write down: No working is required. Give the direct answer.

3. Show that...: The answer is already given. You need to show clear, logical steps to prove it.

4. Give your answer correct to...: Rounding instructions must be followed carefully, otherwise marks are lost.

5. Explain / Justify: Give a mathematical reason in words, not just numbers.

6. Sketch / Draw: 'Sketch' needs the correct shape and important values, while 'Draw' needs accuracy.

and many more.

This helped students understand not just what to answer, but how to present the answer as per the demand of the question. This clarity will help them avoid losing easy marks and approach their exams with more confidence.
